Loropetalum chinense, commonly called Chinese fringe flower, is a white-flowered broad-leaved evergreen shrub of the witch hazel family. It is native to woodlands in Japan, China and Southeast Asia. Leaves are pale green. Lightly aromatic, spidery flowers bloom in clusters in spring (late March-April). Each flower has four narrow, downward-drooping, strap-shaped white petals. However, it is the rubrum variety, with its reddish or pink flowers, that made this shrub popular in landscaping.

Photo showing a short, dumpy English specimen of a hornbeam tree (Latin name: carpinus betulus), appearing rather like a bonsai tree with its unusually thick trunk. This tree is growing in a wildflower meadow, where it has previously suffered storm damage and has fully recovered, growing strongly once more. The picture was taken early on a sunny morning, when the sky was particularly blue.
Viburnum and Lilac shrubs can be seen over the yellow ground cover at the botanical garden.
