Life of Jesus. By Albert Welles. NY 1874 Completely redrawn (in a new style) ancient illustration.
Isaac and Rebekah had twin boys, Jacob (Rebekah's favorite) and Esau (Isaac’s favorite). Jacob offered Esau stew in exchange for Esau’s birthright. Esau took the deal promising Jacob that he would turn over his rights as firstborn son. Isaac was old and blind. He planned to give his final blessing to his firstborn son Esau. Rebekah and Jacob tricked Isaac into giving the blessing to Jacob instead. Rebekah used goat skins to disguise Jacob and make Isaac think he was Esau. The plan worked. When Esau found out he was very angry and decided to kill Jacob. Rebekah overheard Esau’s plan and sent Jacob to her brother Laban’s. One night, Jacob dreamed about a stairway reaching to heaven, with angels going up and down. The Lord was standing before him and promised many descendants. At Laban’s, Jacob fell in love with Rachel. He agreed to work seven years for Laban to marry Rachel, his daughter. Rachel’s older sister, Leah was not married. Laban tricked Jacob into marrying Leah and forced Jacob to work seven more years to marry Rachel. While in Haran, Jacob had eleven sons. Rachel birthed one of them, Joseph--Jacob’s favorite. Jacob wanted to return to Canaan. Laban tried to stop them, but Jacob still left. Jacob and Esau reconciled. Rachel delivered a twelfth son to Jacob, Benjamin. Rachel died when the baby was born. Jacob returned to the home of his father. Isaac died later at the age of 180 and was buried by his sons, Jacob and Esau.

One day Jesus was at his home in Capernaum and a crowd gathered to hear him teach. Four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on his bed. They had brought him to be healed, but could not get inside the house because so many people were there. They cut a hole in the roof and lowered their friend inside. Jesus healed the paralytic man.
When Joash was born, all the young boys were being killed. His aunt protected him by hiding him for six years. Joash began his reign as king at the age of seven. He reigned for 40 years. He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord while Jehoiada was priest. He ordered the repair of the temple. But once Jehoiada was gone, Joash became a treacherous ruler and was eventually assassinated.
Solomon was the son of David and Bathsheba. He became king when David was too old and sick to continue. He was considered a “wise” king. For example, one day two women came to him with a dispute. The women lived in the same house and both had baby boys. One on the boys had died accidentally when the mother rolled over on him in the night. The two women argued over who the remaining baby belonged to. Solomon thought about it and ordered the remaining child be cut in half, one half for each mother. The real mother of the child said “No don’t kill him, give him to her.” Solomon immediately gave the woman the baby because she had proved herself his mother. Solomon built a temple to the Lord. Unfortunately, he did not end his reign as well as he started out. He ended up being disobedient to God. He had multiple wives and concubines, he worshiped idols, and attempted to kill a man named Jeroboam. After Solomon died, his son Solomon became king.
Jeremiah was a prophet during the time of King Josiah. He warned the people about a coming judgment because of their sins. His warnings were largely ignored. God instructed him to write on a scroll a message for the people. Jeremiah and Baruch worked on that scroll, but it was later burned by Jehoiachim. Jeremiah was eventually arrested and put in prison. Upon his release, he fled to Egypt. He shared a message of hope and redemption with the exiles.

Joshua was the successor chosen by Moses. When Moses died, Joshua took leadership over the Israelites in the wilderness. He was the one to lead them into the land promised by God—the “Promised Land”—Canaan. He performed miracles and provided leadership. He helped them to know how to defeat the army of Jericho. Joshua sent spies into investigate. They were helped by Rahab. She hid them and then covered for them when the soldiers asked questions. When Jericho was defeated and destroyed, Rahab and her family were spared. Joshua instructed the Israelites to walk around Jericho one time each day for six days following the priests who were blowing ram’s horns. On the seventh day, Joshua told them to march around the city seven times. On the seventh time around, the walls of Jericho fell and the Israelites were victorious. After Jericho, God allowed the Israelites to prevail over other cities and to capture and kill evil kings. Joshua lived a long and successful life honoring God and leading the Israelites. They honored him when he died.

An Israelite man named Elimelech and his wife, Naomi, moved to Moab where they raised their two sons. The sons grew up and married two women named Ruth and Orpah. First Elimelech died and then later both sons died. Naomi decided to return to Bethlehem with her two daughters-in-law. She decided it would be better for the two women to return to their families. Orpah left. Ruth refused. She insisted that she wanted to go with Naomi. Ruth and Naomi went to Bethlehem. Ruth began to work in a barley field. One day she met the owner, Boaz. He was a remote relative of Naomi’s. Ruth and Boaz married and had a son named Obed.

Jesus shared the parable of the sower. A sower sowed seeds in his fields. The seeds fell on three different types of soil—rocky ground, thorny ground, and good soil. The seed is the word of God. Those sown on rocky ground are people who hear the word and immediately receive it with joy. But have no root and when troubles and suffering come along, they fall away. Seeds sown among the thorns are people who hear the word but the cares of the world and the desire for money choke the word so that it cannot bear fruit. As for what was sown on good soil, these are people who hear the word and understand it. They bear fruit, some yielding thirty-fold, some sixty-fold, and some a hundred-fold.

The Bible is the Word of God . It is the story of the creation of the world, the fall of man, and the coming of Christ to provide a way for man to once again have a relationship with God. The Bible includes the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is pre-Jesus, the New Testament begins with the birth of Jesus. In the Old Testament, we find so many stories that children begin learning at an early age: creation, Adam and Eve, Noah and the flood, Moses and the Israelites in the wilderness, Moses parting the Red Sea, Passover, David and Goliath, King David, Esther, Jonah and the big fish, and so many more. In the Old Testament, we learn the Ten Commandments, sacrifice, sin and forgiveness. Every word of the Bible was given by God and is true.
