Geologic section and rock formations as seen from Yellow Mounds Overlook, Badlands National Park, South Dakota, USA. Three distinctive rock formations are visible; the Yellow Mounds layer at the base topped by the smooth gray Chadron formation and the buttes are part of of the Burle formation. The very highest peak is a remnant of the volcanic Sharps formation.
