The spot where Boer leader Piet Retief and his followers, numbering more than 100, were killed and their bodies left for the vultures on 6 February 1838. Zulu king Dingane had ordered his warriors to kill Retief and his men after inviting them into his nearby palace of umGungundlovu for festivities. Retief and his young son were made to watch each man be bludgeoned to death before they too were executed. Retief's heart and liver were cut out of his body and sprinkled on the ground in order to bewitch his surviving followers.
