A beautifully restored L-4 Grasshopper flies by at Massey Aerodrome, a small grass field on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.\n\nThe L-4 Grasshopper is a light observation and liaison aircraft that served with distinction during World War II. It was used for artillery spotting, aerial photography, courier missions, and communication tasks, providing vital support to ground troops.\n\nThe L-4 Grasshopper saw extensive service during World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Forces, the U.S. Navy (as the NE-1), and other Allied air forces. It played a vital role in numerous campaigns, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Pacific island-hopping campaign.
