Survey marker Explorer Clark etched in stone at Explorers National Monument called Pompeii's Pillar where famous explorer William Clark of Lewis and Clark, inscribed his name in stone. The monument sits beside the Yellowstone River which Clark used to travel back east after completing the exploratory journey to the Pacific Ocean. This is a southern border boundary marker. Beginning in 1849 there were 52 monuments erected along the Mexican border. In 1891 through 1894 new markers were added for a total of 258 markers. Notice the red block facing is broken and scattered and the tubing to the top right has been broken off. Still standing after about 130 years.

Monument at Valley Forge National Historic Park, Pennsylvania, USA

The grasses and sunflowers of the plains of Eastern Colorado hide the horrible history of the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site. It was in these cottonwood trees that over 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians were killed without provocation by Colonel John Chivington and two regiments of soldiers on the morning of November 29, 1864. The tribes under Black Kettle and White Antelope, had signed a treaty committing to live in peace, but Chivington was looking for political gain and took it upon himself to instigate a massacre of unassuming men, women and children.The massacre site was kept secret for years and was not identified publically until 1999. In 2007 the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site was established outside of Eads, Colorado.

The Four Corners is the only place in the United States where four states come together at one place. Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado meet at the Four Corners. Here a person can put each of their hands and feet in four states at the same time.

$An overcast photo of the Lady of Lourdes Grotto/Shrine just before it was torn down in 2008. The trees to the right of it were chopped down and the stumps removed. The farmers have begun working the field to plant crops. The sky is dark and overcast with incoming rain. \nThe grotto was built on the Lourdes Farm, just south of Lethbridge, on Highway 4, owned by the ‘Brothers of Lourdes”. They were a charitable organization from Holland made up of clergy from the Roman Catholic Church. \nThe Grotto/Shrine seen here was built by them in 1955. Modelled after the Shrine of Lourdes in France, it was built with 2X4 wood pieces firmly nailed together and draped with burlap dipped in a concrete slurry. A statue of the Virgin Mary sat in the opening near the top. The bottom opening contained a small alter and candle racks with kneeler benches outside. The grotto was the location of religious ceremonies and was also open for people to worship and light candles. The fence was put in by new owners. Originally there was a turn off from the highway and an area to park.$
