The Chipping Sparrow (Spizella passerina) is a small bird commonly found in the forests of Northern Arizona. Chipping sparrows are small, around 5-6 inches in length, with a wingspan of 8-9 inches. In the breeding season adults have a distinct reddish-brown cap, a clean grayish breast and belly, a black line through the eye, and a white eyebrow stripe. Outside of the breeding season, the cap dulls to a brownish color, and their overall plumage becomes more muted. The chipping sparrow has a short, conical beak that is well-suited for seed consumption. Chipping sparrows thrive in various habitats including ponderosa pine forests, open woodlands, and areas with pinyon-juniper trees, meadows, and scrublands. These sparrows are migratory birds. In Northern Arizona, they are typically present during the spring and summer and migrate south to Mexico or Central America during the winter. Chipping sparrows primarily eat seeds but, to feed their young during the breeding season, they also consume insects. They can be seen foraging on the ground or in low vegetation. This chipping sparrow was photographed at Walnut Canyon Lakes near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
