An idyllic sky at sunset of Piazza IV Novembre, the main square in the medieval neighborhood of Perugia, capital of Umbria, central Italy. In the center, the majestic Palazzo dei Priori, considered one of the greatest examples of public palace architecture in Italy. Still today the seat of the Municipality of Perugia (Town Hall), the building was built between 1293 and 1443 and inside it preserves works and frescoes by great artists, such as Pinturicchio, the Perugino, Raffaello and Benedetto Bonfigli. Always in the center, the Fontana Maggiore (Mayor Fountain), built in 1275 as a terminal of the medieval aqueduct, is composed of two polygonal marble basins concentric decorated with bas-reliefs sculpted by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. On the right, the stairway and the side stone façade of the Duomo di San Lorenzo (Cathedral of Saint Lawrence), built in Gothic style starting from 1345 and completed in 1490 and characterized by its splendid pink marbles. Founded by the Etruscans on an ancient Umbrian settlement, Perugia is one of the most loved and visited medieval Italian cities, rich in artistic and architectural treasures that span almost three thousand years of history. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands. Didim,TURKEY - August 14, 2011: Didyma, located in the southwest part of modern Turkey, was an important religious site of ancient Ionia. It was home to a large temple dedicated to Apollo, called the Didymaion. Pausanias (Greek traveler, ca. 160 A.D.) explained that the Didymaion was constructed before Greek colonization (10th century B.C.), and many believe it actually dates to the 2nd millennium B.C. However, the earliest level of the temple found thus far dates to the end of the 8th century B.C., and the colonnade of the temple was erected a century later.

Aymara woman walking on Isla del Sol (Island Of The Sun), Lake Titicaca, Bolivia. Isla del Sol is an island in the southern part of Lake Titicaca. It is part of the modern Plurinational State of Bolivia. Geographically, the terrain is harsh; it is a rocky, hilly island. There are no motor vehicles or paved roads on the island. The main economic activity of the approximately 800 families on the island is farming, with fishing and tourism augmenting the subsistence economy. Of the several villages, Yumani and Cha'llapampa are the largest. There are over 80 ruins on the island. Most of these date to the Inca period circa the 15h century AD. Archaeologists have discovered evidence that people lived on the island as far back as the third millennium BCE. Many hills on the island contain agricultural terraces, which adapt steep and rocky terrain to agriculture. Among the ruins on the island are the Sacred Rock, a labyrinth-like building called Chicana, Kasa Pata, and Pilco Kaima. In the religion of the Incas, it was believed that the sun god was born here.

Fresco showing winged creature; probably a griffin. The Pompeians used the griffin in their murals, but this mythical creature goes back thousands of years, to India, Assyria and Persia. The creature is basically the combination of an eagle and a lion. The head and front of the body — including the front legs and wings — are represented by an eagle. In addition, the eagle head features long ears that are sometimes feathered. The rest of the body belongs to a lion. Altogether, the creature symbolizes strength and wisdom. Because the griffin traditionally guards treasure, he also symbolizes vengeance.
