A young male Slaty Flowerpiercer (Diglossa plumbea) in the mountains of western Panama. This species is endemic to the Talamanca Mountains of eastern Costa Rica and western Panama. Flowerpiercers are considered odd members of the tanager family (Thraupidae). They have an upset bill with a hook on the end for piercing flowers at the bases to gain access to nectar. In this way they access nectar without benefitting the plant by participating in pollination.
