It’s sometimes called a calico bush because the pink or white flowers usually have dark pink or maroon markings. Nigella damascena, also known as Love-in-a-mist and Devil in the bush, is an annual garden flowering plant, which belongs to the buttercup family Ranunculaceae. Native to southern Europe, north Africa and south-west Asia, it is found on neglected, damp patches of land. Its common name β€œLove-in-a-mist” comes from the flowers being nestled in a ring of multifid, lacy bracts. The flowers, blooming in early summer, are most commonly different shades of blue, but can be white, pink or pale purple, with 5 to 25 petals.
