Cotonou, Littoral Department, Benin: known as the “Ancien Pont”, the 'old bridge', was is the first bridge in the city and the closest to the Atlantic Ocean. Completed in 1930 during the French colonial period and renovated in 1981, it crosses the Kouta canal, connecting the two banks of the Cotonou lagoon, with the port to the west and the industrial zone near the old village of Akpakpa to the east. Ouidah, Atlantique Department, Benin: the Temple of the Pythons is one of the most significant spiritual sites for practitioners of the Vodun (Voodoo) religion. Dedicated to the worship of pythons, which are sacred symbols of strength, fertility, and protection in Vodun, the temple houses dozens of live pythons in a large pit. The temple plays a key role in Vodun rituals and ceremonies, and visitors are often invited to handle the pythons, which are non-venomous snakes. West African Voodoo, or Vodun, is an ancient religion originating in the regions now known as Benin, Togo, and Ghana, and is rooted in the culture and traditions of the Fon, Ewe, and Yoruba peoples. Vodun is centered on the belief in a supreme deity, Mawu, along with a pantheon of spirits known as loa or vodun that govern  nature and human life, such as fertility, agriculture, and death. Ancestral worship and the veneration of natural elements like water, earth, animals and trees are also central to its practice. Rituals often involve music, dance, animal sacrifices, and offerings to the spirits to maintain harmony between the spiritual and physical worlds.
