St Botolph’s Priory in Colchester, Essex, Eastern England, was founded around 1093 and housed Augustinian canons until its dissolution in 1536. It was constructed using flint and reused Roman bricks which were locally readily available thanks to the town’s earlier occupation as a Roman settlement. The Priory was built in typical Norman style with thick circular pillars, round arches and a highly decorative West Front, of which this image shows part. The Priory was badly damaged in 1648 during the siege of Colchester in the Civil War.

Details of the ghost town (or rather ghost village) Anavatos in the mountains of the Greek Island of Chios in the Aegean Sea in summer (July) in black and white. Anavatos (Greek: Ανάβατος) is a medieval, now abandoned, village located 16 km north-west of Chios Town. The village was established in the Byzantine era, probably by workers of the nearby Monastery of Nea Moni. Above the village stands a medieval fortress. The village was abandoned after the Turkish massacre in 1822 and the devastating earth quake in 1881.The image was captured on old-fashioned black and white grainy ISO 400 film by an analogue 35 mm film camera. The granularity is real film grain (due to the presence of small particles of a metallic silver on the negative). Minimal post processing has been done (only adjustment of histogram). The image is part of a series of abandoned and partly ruined houses (ghost towns) in Greece.

Ajlun, or Ajloun, is a medieval castle built by Saladin and designed to intimidate the Franks. Arab military fortifications were strengthened as the years went by and Saladin worked hard to unite the Muslim forces. An imposing stronghold with moat, drawbridge and towers, Ajlun was built in 1184 but lost much of its military significance after the fall of Karak, the crusader stronghold - However, the castle guarded important trade routes into Syria and never fell into disuse. Ajlun featured heavily during the wars between the Mongols and the Mamluk empire, Occupied and severely damaged by the Mongol invaders before being reclaimed by the Mameluk Sultan Baibars. Under Ottomans rule Ajlun Castle continued in an administrative role until the 19th century, when it was abandoned after severe damage from earthquake

Leiston Abbey is an impressive monastic ruins and has some extraordinary architectural features. The abbey, established in 1182, moved to this location in the 14th century. Some of the old abbey building materials were used which is why the new abbey has some Norman features. The ruins are on the outskirts of the Suffolk village Leiston, England.
