$Ávila is a municipality and Spanish city, capital of the province of the same name, in the autonomous community of Castilla y León. It is located next to the course of the Adaja River and is the highest provincial capital in the country, at 1131 m above sea level, due to which snowfall is relatively frequent in the urban area during the winter. The city has a continentalized Mediterranean climate with mountainous nuances. In 2018, its municipal area concentrated 36.38% of the total population of the province.\n\nAfter the Roman foundation and the assimilation of the native Veton population of the area - as there are no clear signs of a pre-Roman settlement in the historic center - the city would pass to Visigothic power. Ávila, like most of the peninsular territory, fell under Muslim rule at the beginning of the 8th century, and would not be definitively reconquered by Christian troops until the 11th century. It experienced a notable boom during the 16th century, only to be plunged into a prolonged crisis and decline until the 19th century, in which the construction of the railway managed to give a certain boost to economic development.$
