This plastic student slide rule from the 1960s is a remarkably adaptable mathematical instrument whose ability to perform calculations such as multiplication and division depends upon the use of logarithmic scales, where larger numbers are closer together than smaller ones. The centre section of the ruler slides up and down. This is a close up photograph showing the right-hand end, where the different scales are identified.
