The bridge, built in Roman times always at the behest of the emperor Hadrian, has been modified over the centuries until it reaches its current form. In 1669 Pope Clement IX ordered the construction of a new parapet designed by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini on which ten statues depicting the Angels of the Passion of Christ were placed. Rome, Italy - October 15, 2007: The Mausoleum of the Roman Emperor Hadrian built between 135 AD and 139 AD and in the foreground, the Ponte Sant'Angelo which was constructed in 134 AD by the Emperor Hadrian. The Mausoleum was converted to a Castle by the Popes in the 14th Century AD. The Papal State also used Sant'Angelo as a residence and even a prison.
