Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula. The tufted duck is a medium-sized diving duck, smaller than a mallard. It is black on the head, neck, breast and back and white on the sides. It has a small crest and a yellow eye. In flight it shows an obvious white stripe across the back of the wing. It breeds in the UK across lowland areas of England, Scotland and Ireland, but less commonly in Wales, with most birds being residents.

The Ring-Necked Duck (Aythya collaris) is a North American diving duck found in freshwater ponds and lakes. The duck’s name comes from the drake’s cinnamon colored neck ring. The male also has two white rings around its gray bill, a shiny black head, black back, a white line on the wings, a white breast and yellow eyes. The female has a grayish brown head and body with a dark brown back and a dark bill. The breeding habitat of the ring-necked duck is lakes and ponds in the northern United States and Canada. Ring-necked ducks pair up during spring migration and then separate after breeding. These ducks are omnivores and feed mainly by diving or dabbling for submerged plants such as pondweed, wild rice, coontail and snails. These two male ring-necked ducks were photographed while swimming in the Bubbling Ponds Fish Hatchery near Cornville, Arizona, USA.

The Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis) is a small North American diving duck. The adult males have a black iridescent head, a black breast and a whitish-grey back and wings. Adult females are dark brown with a white belly and a distinctive white band at the base of the bill. The lesser scaup breeds near inland lakes and marsh ponds from Alaska through western Canada and western Montana. They nest on the ground near water in a sheltered location among thick vegetation such as sedges and bulrushes. The nest consists of a scraped shallow depression lined with plants and down feathers. In the winter they migrate south via the Central and Mississippi Flyways to rivers, lakes, coastal lagoons and bays between the USA-Canada border and as far south as northern Columbia as well as Central America, the West Indies and Bermuda. The lesser scaup forages mainly by diving and sifting through the bottom mud. Their diet consists of mollusks, insects, small fishes and aquatic plants like sedges, bulrushes, pondweeds, widgeon-grass, wild celery and wild rice.
