View of the Caribbean coral reef with the yellow tube sponge in Grand Cayman - Cayman Islands
A large barrel sponge, Xestospongia testudinaria, grows on a reef slope near Komodo National Park, Indonesia. These large filter feeders are common throughout Indo-Pacific reefs.
Giant Sponges can grow to impressing size. These specimen of filter animals live under a rock overhang at the north side of Rozengain Island, Banda Sea, Indonesia, 4°34'41.37 S 130°1'40.194 E at 20m depth

Giant Barrel Sponge Xestospongia testudinaria occurs widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific in a depth range from 2-50m. Specimen in the intertidal zones remain small with 10-20cm diameter, below they can grow to impressing sizes, measuring up to 2.4 meters in height and width. \nThe sponge is covered with several Sea Cucumbers Synaptula lamperti, found in the Western Pacific including the coasts of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Micronesia and the Philippines. The species is very common on coral reefs, both on the exposed and the inner slopes. It is a detrivore that specifically feeds on or around living sponges. \nConsidering the sea cucumbers maximum size of 20cm, the barrel sponge might extend more than 1m from the reef slope. \nBanda Island, Indonesia, 4°30'45.41 S 129°56'7.75 E at 13m depth

Yellow Sea Sponge, Bottom of Tropical Sea, Underwater
Giant Barrel Sponge Xestospongia testudinaria occurs widely distributed in the tropical Indo-Pacific in a depth range from 2-50m. Specimen in the intertidal zones remain small with 10-20cm diameter, below they can grow to impressing sizes, measuring up to 2.4 meters in height and width. Considering that the size of the Kleins Butterflyfish at the base of the sponge is 14-15cm, this is a very massive sponge. The life span of these filter animals is many hundreds of years. \n\nThe sponge is covered with many Sea Cucumbers Synaptula lamperti, found in the Western Pacific including the coasts of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Micronesia and the Philippines. The species is very common on coral reefs, both on the exposed and the inner slopes. It is a detrivore that specifically feeds on or around living sponges. It appears to require the nutrients provided by his host sponge to thrive, as it ingests microscopic organic particles such as diatoms (unicellular microalgae) and also substances exuded from the surface of its host sponge. Most individuals of Synaptula lamperti are either male or female, but hermaphrodites occasionally occur. If Synaptula lamperti becomes damaged, both the anterior and the posterior portions can regenerate into new individuals.\n\nBatu Kapal is a rock shaped like a boat. Batu Kapal means Ship Rock in Bahasa Indonesia.\nBatu Kapal, Banda Sea, Indonesia, 4°29'11.6368 S 129°55'50.9311 E at 24m depth
