Pterois antennata, like many fish species, has very different common names like Broadbarred Firefish and Spotfin Lionfish. The species occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Marquesan and Mangaréva Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Queensland, Australia, Kermadec and Austral Islands in a depth range from 2-86m in lagoon and seaward reefs, hiding in crevices under rocks and coral formations during the day and hunting at night, feeding on shrimps and crabs, max. length 20cm. \nThis specimen is head down. The outline of this fish is visually disturbed by the numerous spiny projections and fleshy tabs improving camouflage by mimicking the Banded Sea Urchin Echinothrix calamaris. Pterois antennata is an ambush hunter, using his camouflage to prey on unsuspecting fish and invertebrates.\nTriton Bay, Kaimana Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia, 3°51'48.0312 S 133°55'48.9612 E at 9m depth

Common Lionfish Pterois volitans inhabits lagoon and seaward reefs from turbid inshore areas to depths of 50 m, max. length 38cm. Often solitary, they hide in unexposed places at daytime often with head down and practically immobile, using the pattern for camouflage as a hunting skill. The species has recently invaded Western Atlantic and Caribbean coral reefs, and may become one of the most ecologically harmful marine fish introductions to date. The dorsal fins are venomous, but it is a popular table fish. This specimen inbetween sponges, hydroids and soft corals is from Nailaka Island, Banda Sea, Indonesia, \n4°32'37.728 S 129°40'48.3 E at 13m depth

Baby reef in shallow water on Red Sea / Lahami Bay. The Red Sea is a rich and diverse ecosystem. More than 1200 species of fish have been recorded in the Red Sea, and around 10% of these are found nowhere else. This also includes 42 species of deepwater fish. The rich diversity is in part due to the 2,000 km (1,240 mi) of coral reef extending along its coastline; these fringing reefs are 5000–7000 years old and are largely formed of stony acropora and porites corals. The reefs form platforms and sometimes lagoons along the coast and occasional other features such as cylinders (such as the Blue Hole (Red Sea) at Dahab). These coastal reefs are also visited by pelagic species of Red Sea fish, including some of the 44 species of shark.

Pterois, lionfish
Tropical fish - The Red Lionfish (Pterois volitans) is very dangerous coral reef fish. Lionfish venomous dorsal spines are used for defense.
Redbreasted Wrasse Cheilinus fasciatus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the east coast of Africa and islands of the western Indian Ocean to Micronesia and Samoa and Tonga, north to the Ryukyu Islands, Japan and south to Queensland, Australia in a depth range from 4-60m, but usually not deeper than 40m, max. length 40cm. This specimen was encountered at the Iro Wreck, a 143 meter oil tanker wreck since March 1944, WWII, was ordered by the Japanese Navy during the 1920´s building programs. Although heavily overgrown with black coral and sponges, the torpedo hole is still clearly visible. The wreck sits upright between 15m and 36m of water. The outside of the ship has developed a nice coating of colourful invertebrates, mostly sponges and oysters. Palau 7°17'40.08 N 134°25'15.51 E at 20m depth
