Avezzano (Italy): Cunicoli di Claudio, a series of tunnels excavated in Mount Saviano to empty lake Fucino (third largest italian lake at the time), in order to protect villages from floods and create new agricultural land. The massive hydraulic and engineering project was commissioned by the roman emperor Claudius between 41 and 52 A.D.: a 6 km-long tunnel and six monumental service tunnels, each from 5 to 10 m wide, with 32 boreholes. 30,000 workmen and slaves completed the tunnel in just 11 years: the longest ever built until Fréjus Rail Tunnel in 1871.

Hezekiah's Tunnel, located within the City of David archaeological site in Jerusalem, Israel, is a remarkable engineering feat that holds historical and cultural significance. This ancient water tunnel was constructed during the reign of King Hezekiah of Judah around 700 BCE.\n\nThe tunnel was built to secure the water supply of Jerusalem during a time of impending siege. The tunnel stretches through solid rock, connecting the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloam. It's an incredible example of ancient engineering, showcasing the skill and determination of its creators.\n\nToday, visitors can walk through Hezekiah's Tunnel, wading through knee-deep water in the dimly lit passage, which offers an immersive experience of history and ingenuity. The tunnel symbolizes the resourcefulness of ancient civilizations and the importance of water management in sustaining cities. It stands as a unique testament to Jerusalem's rich history and its ability to adapt and endure through challenging times.
