Rosa rugosa, beach rose

A pair of blooming beach roses (rosa Rugosa) along a Cape Cod pathway.

Rosa rugosa, commonly called Rugusa rose and Japanese rose, is native to Japan, northern China and Korea. It is a bristly, prickly, sprawling, suckering shrub rose. Odd-pinnate dark green leaves (each with 5-9 leaflets) turn yellow (sometimes orange red) in autumn. Fragrant flowers are rose pink to white, which are primarily single (5 petals), but are semi-double or double in some varieties and hybrid cultivars, which primarily bloom from late May to July. Flowers are followed by fleshy, edible, tomato-shaped fruits which appear green but ripen to bright red by late summer, lasting until late fall.

Once a popular hedge plant in many Danish summerhouse areas, the Rugosa rose has now spread into the wild. Efforts are underway to reduce its numbers, as it’s become invasive. The rose hips are prized for jam-making and are especially rich in vitamin C.
