Pollen is a powdery substance produced by most types of flowers of seed plants for the purpose of sexual reproduction. It consists of pollen grains (highly reduced microgametophytes), which produce male gametes (sperm cells). Pollen grains have a hard coat made of sporopollenin that protects the gametophytes during the process of their movement from the stamens to the pistil of flowering plants, or from the male cone to the female cone of gymnosperms.

During the spring season, large amounts of pollen become airborne from forests. Allergic symptoms caused by this are considered a problem. We have created an image of yellow pollen flying around. You can use it as an image for topics such as pollen allergy.

Pollen grains from different plants, computer illustration. Pollen grain size, shape and surface texture differ from one plant species to another, as seen here. The outer wall (exine) of the pollen in many plant species is highly sculpted which may assist in wind, water or insect dispersal. This pollen sculpting is also used by botanists to recognise plant species. Pores in the pollen wall help in water regulation and germination. These reproductive male spores produced by seed plants contain the male gametes. Pollen fertilises the female egg, with subsequent formation of plant seeds.
An extreme close-up captures the intricate structure of a daisy's stamen, highlighting vibrant blue pollen atop orange-tinted bases. The macro perspective reveals fine details and striking colour within the flower’s centre.
Pollen grains within a Stellaria graminea anther. The anther is the pollen-bearing body of the stamen, which is the male part of flowering plants. S. graminea is a species of flowering plant in the Caryophyllaceae family, known commonly as lesser stitchwort and grass-like starwort. The herb is a common plant of waysides, hedgerows and open woodlands. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), magnified x200 when printed at 10cm wide.

Pollen grains on Cosmos bipinnatus anther. Cosmos bipinnatus is a flowering herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family, known commonly as garden cosmos or Mexican aster. This herb is a common plant of open fields, roadsides. The variably colored flowers also make it a popular ornamental garden plant. The anthers are the male reproductive parts that produce the pollen. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), magnified x150 when printed at 10cm wide.
