Kathmandu, Nepal: Swayambhu Mahachaitya, a Buddhist temple complex on a hill in western Kathmandu - along with Borobudur in Java, Swayambhunath is considered one of the oldest Buddhist temple complexes in the world. The age of the internal buildings is estimated to be around 2,500 years. The dominant element of the temple complex is the Buddhist stupa with the painted eyes, which is clearly visible from Kathmandu and flanked by two Hindu towers. As in many other places in Kathmandu, Buddhist and Hindu places of worship are closely intertwined in Swayambhunath. The Eyes of Buddha are painted on all four sides of the cube at the top of the stupa to symbolize the Buddha's wisdom seeing all things in all four cardinal directions. The nose symbol stands for Nirvana, the small circle is the 'third eye' of Buddha, symbol of spiritual awakening of knowledge and wisdom.
