Rome, Italy, 01 November -- A suggestive evening view of the Roman Pantheon and Piazza della Rotonda in the heart of the Eternal City, with dozens of tourists sitting among the outdoor tables of typical Italian restaurants. Built in 27 BC by the Consul Marco Vispanio Agrippa for the emperor Augustus and dedicated to the Roman divinities, the majestic Pantheon is one of the best preserved Roman structures in the world. The fountain with the Egyptian obelisk in the center of the square was built by the sculptor Leonardo Sormani in 1575 on a project by the architect Giacomo della Porta. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Super wide angle image in high definition format.

The dome of the Pantheon, built in concrete and brick, is a masterpiece of engineering and the prototype of all the domes subsequently built in Christian churches in Europe. With a diameter of 43.44 meters, it is still the largest dome in the world today. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The Pantheon ('to every god') in the Piazza della Rotonda in Rome, Italy was built by Marcus Agrippa in 27 BC and rebuilt by Emperor Hadrian in about 126 AD. The concrete for the coffered dome was poured in moulds, probably mounted on temporary scaffolding. The oculus (round opening on top of the dome) is the main source of natural light.
