Looking down on Phoenix, Arizona from the top of Camelback Mountain on a beautiful day
Table Mesa or Table Mountain is a prominent natural landmark of Maricopa County in the Tonto National Forest. It is characterized by rugged terrain and offers stunning views of the surrounding Sonoran Desert landscape, featuring the saguaro cactus and unique rock formations. This view of Table Mesa was photographed near New River, Arizona, USA.
The giant saquaro cactus is the universal symbol of the American west. These rare plants can have onver 50 arms and can live for 150-200 years and are the largest catus in the United States.

The Ajo Mountain Drive offers breathtaking views of the unique Sonoran Desert landscape, featuring a variety of flora and fauna. Two of the standout features of the area are the Organ Pipe Cactus (Stenocereus thurberi) and the Saguaro Cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). The Saguaro stands tall, often reaching heights of 40 feet or more and living up to two centuries. Its characteristic silhouette, adorned with 'arms' reaching towards the sky, serves as a testament to its endurance in harsh desert conditions. In contrast, the Organ Pipe Cactus thrives in clusters, its slender stems resembling a congregation of organ pipes, hence its name. This cactus species flourishes in rocky terrain, its multiple stems serving as water reservoirs to survive extended periods of drought. These two are endemic to the Sonoran Desert and found nowhere else in the world. This scene , which includes Tillotson Peak, was photographed from the Ajo Mountain Drive in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument south of Ajo, Arizona, USA.

Sitgreaves Pass, at 3586 feet above sea level, is where the historic Beale's Wagon Road crossed the Black Mountains of Mohave County, Arizona, USA. When Edward Fitzgerald Beale built his wagon road over the pass, he named it John Howells Pass for one of the men in his expedition of October, 1857. Subsequently, the pass was named for Captain Lorenzo Sitgreaves who led the 1851 Expedition Down the Zuni and Colorado Rivers. Years later the pass was used for the famous Route 66 between Los Angeles and Chicago. The narrow two lane highway is still in use today. In the early spring, the area around Sitgreaves Pass is dominated by wild California Poppies which fill the meadows with a dense carpet of orange.
