Amsterdam, The Netherlands: Portuguese Synagogue (the Esnoga / Snoge) - 17th-century Sephardic temple - the interior is of the longitudinal Iberian-Sephardic type, the dark wood benches came from an earlier synagogue built in 1639, these are arranged in two halves, facing each other across a central aisle, the women’s gallery is supported by twelve stone columns - brass chandeliers provide light from candles, no electrical power is used.

The churches, such as the Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Se Cathedral, stand as majestic landmarks with intricate facades, large courtyards, and imposing towers. The photograph aims to capture the grandeur and architectural finesse of these religious edifices, while also shedding light on their historical significance. The cathedral was built between 1151 and 1174 in a Romanesque style. Elements were added to the cathedral over the years and include Gothic features (apses and sanctuary) and Herrera style features (cloister). The building has three naves, a transept and three semicircular apses. Its dome base with 16 double arches supports the scaled dome, which is the symbol of the city of Zamora and is what differentiates it from other cathedrals. It has only one square-based belltower. Inside the cathedral has a whole host of works of art.

Between two rather less spectacular memorials on the wall in St Nicholas’ Chapel in King’s Lynn, Norfolk, Eastern England, is this interesting memorial to Thomas Snelling and his wife Margaret, who are kneeling an facing each other each side of a prayer desk. Their daughter and three sons are depicted below, the youngest boy in his cradle. A descriptive plaque can be seen below the children’s figures. The current St Nicholas Chapel was built in the early 15th century as a ‘chapel of ease’ granted to the monks of the priory church of St Margaret (now King’s Lynn Minster).
