Monument Valley, on the Arizona - Utah border, gives us some of the most iconic and enduring images of the American Southwest. The harsh empty desert is punctuated by many colorful sandstone rock formations. It can be a photographer's dream to capture the ever-changing play of light on the buttes and mesas. Even to the first-time visitor, Monument Valley will probably seem very familiar. This rugged landscape has achieved fame in the movies, advertising and brochures. It has been filmed and photographed countless times over the years. If a movie producer was looking for a landscape that epitomizes the Old West, a better location could not be found. This picture of The North Window Overlook was photographed from the Monument Valley Road north of Kayenta, Arizona, USA.

Homol'ovi is a Hopi word which means “Place of the Little Hills.” The name is very appropriate since the area is mostly flat with several buttes and other small mounds. Between approximately 1260 and 1400 CE, the area was occupied by the Ancestral Hopi. Several large villages were established during this period. These villages were part of a larger network of settlements in the region, connected through trade and shared cultural practices. The remains of these villages contain numerous artifacts, including pottery shards, stone tools, and remnants of structures. The Homolovi sites provide important insights into the lives of the Ancestral Hopi, their agricultural practices, and their interactions with neighboring cultures. By the late 14th century, the Homolovi villages were largely abandoned, likely due to environmental changes, resource depletion, or social factors. Homolovi State Park, north of Winslow, Arizona, USA was established in 1986 with the help of the Hopi tribe who considered these lands a part of their ancestral homeland. The park presently serves as a center of archeological research. It is located near the Little Colorado River in a floodplain where the natives farmed their crops. The largest of the park’s pueblos at one time contained an estimated 1,200 - 2,000 rooms. The only remaining structure is the kiva in the oldest section of the pueblo. The kiva was an underground house used for religious purposes. The Hopi people continue to make pilgrimages to the site to renew the ties of their people to the land. Also, the Hopi Tribe is actively involved in the management and interpretation of the park, ensuring that their ancestral heritage is respectfully and accurately represented. Homolovi State Park today is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Ancestral Hopi and their connection to the land. It offers a unique opportunity to explore and learn about the ancient cultures that once thrived in the region.

Nearly a thousand years ago natives inhabited the plains between the Painted Desert and the San Francisco Peaks of Arizona. In an area so dry it would seem impossible to live, they built pueblos, harvested rainwater, grew crops and raised families. Today the remnants of their villages dot the landscape. Wupatki Pueblo is in Wupatki National Monument, established in 1924 to preserve this rich heritage. Wupatki National Monument is near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
