The Kazakh province is home to nomadic herders and eagle hunters, who spend the summer months living in gers and grazing their livestock in the area, before migrating to a winter camp in the mountainous region. A woman is hand-milking one of the cows close to the family ger, with goats & sheep kept nearby.

West Mongolia is an incredible harsh place to live. Population in this part of the country is even more sparse than in other areas of Mongolia. Gers are the traditional constructions used by the nomads in Mongolia and Central Asia.

Close up of a traditional nomadic herder’s ger, in the Kazakh region of the Altai Mountains in Western Mongolia. Held together with wooden poles, the woollen felt & canvas covered gers can be packed up & moved quickly & easily. They are set up in different livestock grazing areas depending on the season. They are home to families who live together in remote locations, moving each season. An ornately carved door and patterned fabric along the bottom of the ger gives a personal touch to the temporary home.
