This was taken later in the day on the second day during my 3 day visit of the ruins. The lower sun lights up the stocks and gives them a warmer appearance.

I was at Machu Picchu for 3 days and 2 nights. On the second day, I bought a bus ticket for the next day to go from Aguas Calientes, the city at the base, to Machu Picchu. I woke up to pouring rain. I thought, I have enough pictures, I don't want to deal with this rain. But I had already bought a bus ticket for 7 AM. So I went up. On the way up, the rain stopped. After being at the summit for about 15 minutes, the clouds started to move away, and quickly so. I took a bunch of pictures of the scene. Some had too many clouds still enshrouding the mountain, others too few to make it interesting. in about 3 minutes, it was all over. The summit went from being totally obscured by clouds to completely clear. This shot came out best. Enough clouds to make it unique, while offering good visibility. The people at the bottom are tiny and give a sense of scale. It's probably the most awesome scene I have ever witnessed.
