The Hagia Sophia was the main temple of Byzantium then the Muslim mosque and museum but now is Holy Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque (Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i Şerifi) This redesignation is controversial, drawing condemnation from the Turkish opposition, UNESCO, the World Council of Churches, the International Association of Byzantine Studies, and many international leaders.

Originally built as a Christian cathedral in the 6th century, it later served as a mosque before being converted into a museum in the 20th century. Originally constructed as a cathedral in 537 CE during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it served as the center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity for nearly a thousand years. After the Ottoman occupation of Constantinople in 1453, it was converted into a mosque, reflecting the city's transition to Islamic rule. In 1935, it was secularized, being reconverted into a mosque in 2020. Its design, characterized by a massive central dome and a blend of Byzantine and Islamic architectural elements, continues to be studied and admired for its engineering and aesthetic achievements.

The Cathedral of Hagia Sophia in the Constantinople was converted to a mosque after the Ottoman Conquest. In the 19th century postcards, the city`s name is written both as the Constantinople and Istanbul or equivalents like Stamboul.
