They were almost hunted to extinction for their fur.

Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short, thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species in five genera. Their range extends from the subarctic to tropical waters of the global ocean in both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, with the notable exception of the northern Atlantic Ocean.

Espanola is located at the extreme in the southeast of the archipelago.Two spots of the island are very popular: Bahia Gardener, a beautiful sandy beach with sea lions and Punta Suarez (please join my following templates).

A New Zealand fur seal (Arctocephalus forsteri) lies on the rock platform off Point Kean in Kaikoura. The external ear-flap can be clearly seen. The seal has one front flipper resting on the rocks, as it raises the rear flipper. It is camoflagued by the colour of the fur so easily missed when lying still.
