Juvenile Giant Frogfish (pale pink phase) found on Sponge.
Warty Frogfish Antennarius maculatus occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from the Maldives and Mauritius to Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia in a depth range from 1-15m, max. length 15cm.\nThe solitary species inhabits sheltered rocky reefs. Adults are frequently among algae, soft corals and sponges, like this specimen. Juveniles live openly on reefs looking like nudibranchs. Antennarius maculatus feeds on fishes. \nColoration is highly variable, ranging from cream to yellow, brown, or black with scattered dark circular spots and saddles or blotches ranging from white to pink, rust-red, or red. Heavily spotted individuals resemble Antennarius pictus. Antennarius maculatus usually has red or orange margins on all fins and the first band across the body diverts to the posterior edge of the eye which distinguishes it from Antennarius pictus. \nLembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°27'13.1058 N 125°14'14.6331 E at 10m depth

The white frogfish is a unique and elusive species found around Mabul Island, Malaysia. Known for its comical appearance and excellent camouflage, this small fish blends seamlessly into its surroundings, typically hiding among corals or sponges. Its white color, along with the ability to change hues, allows it to remain nearly invisible to predators. Frogfish use a specialized lure on their heads to attract prey, making them fascinating to watch. Though difficult to spot, encountering a white frogfish during a dive in Mabul is a thrilling experience, showcasing the island’s rich marine biodiversity.
Painted Frogfish Antennarius pictus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian and Society islands in a depth range from 0 to 75m, max. length 30cm. The species inhabits shallow sheltered reefs. Adults usually are often with sponges, mimicking them or nudibranchs. Marking patterns and colour are highly variable. The different colorations are not due to different specimens or distinct subspecies but are instead phases of the same individual. Over days or weeks, the frogfish adjusts its color to match the substrate, coral, sponges, or other surroundings. \nThe species is an ambush predator, waiting patiently for unsuspecting prey that thinks it is swimming past a sponge. \nThis yellow specimen was encountered on an soft coral in the Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia\n1°29'33.414 N 125°15'40.446 E at 20m depth

Over days or weeks, the frogfish adjusts its color to match the substrate, coral, sponges, or other surroundings. \nThe species is an ambush predator, waiting patiently for unsuspecting prey that thinks it is swimming past a sponge or an ascidian. \nThis cream colored specimen is located above a Colonial Ascidian Didemnum sp., which it resembles surprisingly well. \nLembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia\n1°29'33.414 N 125°15'40.446 E at 24m depth
