The Hispid Frogfish or Shaggy Angler Antennarius hispidus occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific in still muddy habitats that are either deep or offshore in a depth range from 0-90m. The color of this species is highly variable. This is a young specimen in a yellow phase. Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia 1°29'7 \

Hairy Frogfish, small juvenile - Antennarius striatus. Underwater macro world of tropical seas.
Painted Frogfish Antennarius pictus occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Hawaiian and Society islands in a depth range from 0 to 75m, max. length 30cm. The species inhabits shallow sheltered reefs. Adults usually are with sponges, mimicking small sponges, nudibranchs or in this case, colonial ascidian. Marking patterns and color are highly variable. The different colorations are not due to different specimens or distinct subspecies but are instead phases of the same individual. Over days or weeks, the frogfish adjusts its color to match the substrate, coral, sponges, or other surroundings. \nThe species is an ambush predator, waiting patiently for unsuspecting prey that thinks it is swimming past a sponge or an ascidian. \nThis cream colored specimen is located above a Colonial Ascidian Didemnum sp., which it resembles surprisingly well. \nLembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia\n1°29'33.414 N 125°15'40.446 E at 24m depth

White froggies, or white frogfishes, are a fascinating and elusive species commonly found around Mabul Island, Malaysia. These small, anglerfish-like creatures are known for their unique, comical appearance, with large, bulbous heads and broad, flattened bodies. Their white color helps them blend seamlessly into their surroundings, often hiding among corals, sponges, or algae. This camouflage, combined with their ability to shift hues, makes them challenging to spot even for experienced divers.\n\nOne of the most intriguing features of white frogfishes is their esca, a specialized lure on their heads. This fleshy appendage mimics the movement of small prey, attracting fish or shrimp within striking distance. Once prey is near, the frogfish ambushes it with incredible speed and precision, despite their slow-moving nature.\n\nMabul Island’s clear waters and vibrant coral reefs provide the perfect habitat for these stealthy predators. They are masters of disguise, often blending into the reef and requiring keen eyes to find. Encountering a white froggie during a dive is a thrilling experience, offering a glimpse into the incredible biodiversity of the island’s marine life. For divers, spotting a white frogfish is a highlight of exploring the underwater world of Mabul, showcasing the unique and often hidden wonders of the ocean.

Weedy Scorpionfish Rhinopias frondosa occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific from South Africa (off Durban) east to southern Japan, the Caroline Islands, and eastern Australia in a depth range from 10 to 297m, max. length 23cm. \nThe colour can range from yellow and lavender to dark red and purple. Like most Scorpaenidae, Weedy Scorpionfish are mostly nocturnal ambush hunters, using their camouflage to prey on unsuspecting fish and invertebrates. They rarely swim (they do not have a swim bladder!), but rather move along the bottom propelling themselves with their fins. \nThis specimen was encountered in the Lembeh Strait, Indonesia \n1°25'51.21 N 125°11'5.142 E at 30m depth\n\nN.B. \nThe deep blue background is a mix of the low color temperature of the lamp and the underexposure of some areas. There was no color temperature change with Photoshop.
