Hooker’s Evening Primrose (Oenothera elata) is a tall native of western and central North America.  It can be found in meadows and woodlands up to 9,000 feet elevation.  It has a stout reddish stem with long, narrow leaves.  At the top is a cluster of wide yellow flowers with 4 petals.  The flowers have protruded stamens and a pistil covered in pollen.  The flowers open toward dusk and wilt the next day turning pink or red.  This evening primrose was photographed at Soliere Meadows in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.

Rubber Rabbitbrush (Ericameria nauseosa) is a North American shrub in the sunflower or aster family.  It grows in the arid regions of the west from the Great Plains to the Pacific and northern Mexico.  It is a perennial shrub and can reproduce from seeds and root sprouts.  It has small yellow flowers and blooms from August to October.  Rabbitbrush thrives in poor alkaline soils that are common to the desert.  It is an important source of food for browsing wildlife.  This rabbitbrush with Mount Elden in the background was photographed in a meadow on Campbell Mesa in the Coconino National Forest near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
