$Tall biennial, to 2m; stem erect, prickly on the angles. Basal leaves in a large rosette, oblong-elliptical, untoothed, prickly, withering early in the second season; stem-leaves linear-lanceolate, the pairs fused together around the stem at their bases. Flowers pinkish-purple, in large spiny oblong-cylindrical heads, 3-8cm long.\nHabitat: On many places, especially on clay soils.\nFlowering Season: July-august.\nDistribution: Britain, Belgium, Holland, France, Italy and Germany; naturalized in Denmark.\n\nThis beautiful Species is much to be seen in the River Area of the Netherlands.$

An erect, short to medium perennial. Basal leaves leathery and usually persistent, oval in outline, 3-lobed, the terminal lobe pinnately-divided and with opposite lobes, spiny-toothed; stem leaves unstalked, clasping the stem. Flowers pale greenish-white, in dense rounded heads 10-15mm, the whole forming a flat-topped inflorescence; bracts linear-lanceolate, with or without one pair of spines. Fruit with dense, overlapping scales.

$Low to short hairy annual or biennial; hairs whitish or reddish. Lower leaves stalked, upper unstalked, the leaflets linear-oblong; stipules lanceolate, pointed. Flowers whitish or pinkish, 4mm long, numerous, in dense oblong or egg-shaped, stalked, silky-hairy heads, the petals much shorter than the calyx. Pod 1 seeded.\nHabitat: Dry grasslands, often on slightly acid soils, field borders, grassy heaths, road verges, woodland pathways, waste places, sometimes on sand dunes, at low attitudes.\nFlowering Season: June-September.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, except the extreme North.\n\nThis is a common Species on the described Habitats in the Netherlands.$
