United States. Arizona. Coconino County. The desert near Lake Powell. Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River, between Utah and Arizona. It is a vacation spot visited by two million people every year. It lies on an area of 161,390 acres (65,310 ha) and has 1960 miles (3161 km) of shoreline (more than the entire Pacific coast of USA). Because of its ecological effect on the Colorado River and on the environment, Lake Powell and its dam have inspired heavy controversy from environmentalists.

Camelback Mountain is a prominent feature of the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona. It is part of the McDowell Mountain Range and is composed primarily of Precambrian granite. The mountain has been weathered by rain, wind and other forces of nature over millions of years. This erosion has given the mountain a distinctive hump-back “camel” shape thus leading to its name. The area around Camelback Mountain is home to a variety of cacti, including saguaros, as well as a range of other desert plants and animals, such as jackrabbits, rattlesnakes, and Gila monsters. The mountain's summit provides a critical habitat for a number of bird species, including hawks, vultures, and eagles. This view of the surrounding area was photographed from the Echo Canyon trail on Camelback Mountain near Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

The Ajo Mountain Drive offers breathtaking views of the unique Sonoran Desert landscape, featuring a variety of flora and fauna. Two of the standout features of the area are the Organ Pipe Cactus (Stenocereus thurberi) and the Saguaro Cactus (Carnegiea gigantea). The Saguaro stands tall, often reaching heights of 40 feet or more and living up to two centuries. Its characteristic silhouette, adorned with 'arms' reaching towards the sky, serves as a testament to its endurance in harsh desert conditions. In contrast, the Organ Pipe Cactus thrives in clusters, its slender stems resembling a congregation of organ pipes, hence its name. This cactus species flourishes in rocky terrain, its multiple stems serving as water reservoirs to survive extended periods of drought. These two are endemic to the Sonoran Desert and found nowhere else in the world. This scene , which includes Tillotson Peak, was photographed from the Ajo Mountain Drive in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument south of Ajo, Arizona, USA.

The Verde Valley (Spanish: Valle Verde or Green Valley) is a lush valley in central Arizona and one of a few riparian habitats in the state. The Verde River runs through the valley and is joined by Oak Creek, Beaver Creek and West Clear Creek. The Verde River is one of the state’s remaining free-flowing river systems and provides critical habitat for fish and wildlife. The valley is bounded by the Mogollon Rim to the north and Mingus Mountain to the south. The Verde Valley includes about 714 square miles in the center of Arizona and is about 100 miles north of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The valley is also noted for its many red rock formations. This fall colored scene of the Verde Valley, Mogollon Rim and Cathedral Rocks was photographed from the Eagle’s Nest Trail near Oak Creek in Red Rock State Park near Sedona, Arizona, USA.

Valley of Fire State Park is a public state park and nature preservation area covering about 19,000 ha located 26 km south of Overton, Nevada. It is a popular Las Vegas day trip. Amazing red sandstone formations, beautiful natural arches, ancient petroglyphs an hour drive outside of Vegas. The state park derives its name from red sandstone formations, the Aztec Sandstone, which formed from shifting sand dunes 150 million years ago. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays. It is Nevada's oldest state park, as commemorated with Nevada Historical Marker 150. It became a National Natural Landmark in 1968.
An emblem of Southwest USA, Sagebrush is in the forefront of a dramatic Nevada landscape. Safebrush is the official state plant of Nevada and covers most of the state. It is rarely eaten by wildlife or livestock because of the bitterness of its foliage.
