Buddha in Cave 6, one of the richest of the Yungang sites. It was constructed between 465 and 494 C.E. by Emperor Xiao Wen. The entire interior of the cave is carved and painted. The walls of the upper stories are host to carvings of standing Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and monks among other celestial figures. Yungang Grottoes, are excellent examples of rock-cut architecture and one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China. The others are Longmen and Mogao.

It enjoys a lofty historical position in rock cave art. The Dunhuang Grottoes are a three-dimensional art combining architecture, sculpture and murals. The Dunhuang Grottoes are among the three major grottoes in China, along with the Yungang Grottoes in Datong, Shanxi Province, and the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, Henan Province. In 1961, the State Council designated the Dunhuang Grottoes as a national key cultural relic protection unit. In 1987, the Dunhuang Grottoes were listed as a cultural heritage on the World Heritage List. Here, regardless of the seasons - spring, summer, autumn, or winter - there are many tourists from both China and abroad visiting every day.$

The 13.7-meter-tall colossal Buddha of Cave 20, an icon of Chinese art, excavated from the sandstone cliff at Yungang Grottoes, ancient Chinese Buddhist temple grottoes built during the Northern Wei dynasty near the city of Datong, in the province of Shanxi. They are excellent examples of rock-cut architecture and one of the three most famous ancient Buddhist sculptural sites of China. The others are Longmen and Mogao.
