Istanbul / Constantinople, Eastern Thrace, Turkey: the Hagia Sophia’s architectural design incorporates a complex system of domes, semi-domes, and pendentives and buttresses, demonstrating advanced engineering techniques of its time. The central dome, with a diameter of approximately 31 meters, is supported by pendentives that transfer its weight to four massive piers, allowing for an open and unobstructed interior space. Flanking the main dome are two large semi-domes positioned on the east and west, which extend the structure longitudinally and help to distribute the load. Smaller domes and semi-domes further support the system and contribute to the overall stability of the structure. This combination of features not only resolves the engineering challenges of spanning a vast interior space but also defines the distinctive architectural form of the Hagia Sophia.
