Sacred Navajo land. Spider Rock Overlook at Canyon De Chelly National Monument Near Chinle Arizona
Canyon de Chelly National Monument, in northeastern Arizona, preserves nearly 5,000 years of human history within its dramatic sandstone walls. The canyon has been home to Ancestral Puebloans, known as the Anasazi, who built cliff dwellings here between 350 and 1300 CE, and to the Diné (Navajo) people who continue to live and farm within its sheltered valleys today. Carved by the forces of water and wind over millions of years, the canyon’s sheer cliffs rise to 1,000 feet above the canyon floor, revealing layers of ancient rock from the Permian period. From these rim overlooks, visitors can gaze down upon a living landscape where Navajo families maintain their traditions amidst towering formations, cottonwood groves, and sacred archaeological sites. This scene was photographed at the Tsegi Overlook on the South Rim at Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle, Arizona, USA.
