The house sparrow is native to most of Europe, the Mediterranean region, and much of Asia. It has been introduced to many parts of the world, including Australia, Africa, and the Americas, making it the most widely distributed wild bird. Although many leave for the winter, pockets of them stick around all year.\nThe mourning dove, meanwhile, is found year-round in the desert, usually closer to the ground than the white-winged. It has dark dots along its sides.\nThis one is hanging out on a cactus, and has white-edges on its wings and blue eye rings. White-winged dove? Check.$

Desert birds tend to be much more abundant where the vegetation is lusher and thus offers more insects, fruit and seeds as food. Where the Arizona cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tucson and Mesa adjoin desert washes or foothills these birds can be common as well.
