A variety of doves spend time among the cactus and brush of the Sonoran Desert, in and around Tucson, Arizona.\nThese images were captured along the Painted Hills Trails, in Pima County west of the city proper.\nTwo regulars are the mourning dove and the white-winged dove.\nThe white-winged is an important pollinator, and you'll therefore often see it on the on the tops of the ubiquitous saguaro cactus when during blooming season. It also has thin but distinct blue circles around its eyes. Although many leave for the winter, pockets of them stick around all year.\nThe mourning dove, meanwhile, is found year-round in the desert, usually closer to the ground than the white-winged. It has dark dots along its sides.\nThis one is hanging out on a cactus, and has white-edges on its wings and blue eye rings. White-winged dove? Check.

Desert birds tend to be much more abundant where the vegetation is lusher and thus offers more insects, fruit and seeds as food. Where the Arizona cities of Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tucson and Mesa adjoin desert washes or foothills these birds can be common as well.
