Rome, Italy, 01 November -- A suggestive evening view of the Roman Pantheon and Piazza della Rotonda in the heart of the Eternal City, with dozens of tourists sitting among the outdoor tables of typical Italian restaurants. Built in 27 BC by the Consul Marco Vispanio Agrippa for the emperor Augustus and dedicated to the Roman divinities, the majestic Pantheon is one of the best preserved Roman structures in the world. The fountain with the Egyptian obelisk in the center of the square was built by the sculptor Leonardo Sormani in 1575 on a project by the architect Giacomo della Porta. Rome, Italy, February 10 -- A warm ray of sun at sunset illuminates the Fontana della Barcaccia near the monumental stairway of Trinità dei Monti, or Spanish Steps, in the baroque heart of Rome. This iconic fountain in Rome was finished in 1629 by the architect and sculptor Pietro Bernini, father of the more famous Gian Lorenzo Bernini, commissioned by Pope Urban VIII. According to tradition, Gian Lorenzo himself participated in the final construction of the fountain on the death of his father in 1629. A masterpiece of the late Roman Baroque, the monumental stairway of the Trinità dei Monti (Spanish Steps) was built in 1721 to connect the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti (top in the photo) with the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Square). Designed by the architect and urban planner Francesco De Sanctis, the Spanish Steps were inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1725. Built starting from 1502 in the Renaissance style, the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti was commissioned by Charles VIII, King of France, to give a stable accommodation to the religious Order of the Minims. In 1570 the façade was rebuilt based on a design by the architects Giacomo Della Porta and Carlo Maderno, with the construction of the two characteristic bell towers. A stunning sunset light envelops the National Monument of the Altare della Patria, in the historic heart of Rome. The Altare della Patria, or Vittoriano, was built in 1885 in neoclassical style in honor of the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II (bronze equestrian statue in the center) near the Roman Forum, between the north side of the Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio) and the central Piazza Venezia. Inside is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a War Memorial dedicated to all the Italian soldiers who died in the war. The Altare della Patria is the scene of all the official Italian civic celebrations, in particular the Republic Day on June 2 and the Liberation Day on April 25. The Trevi Fountain (Italian: Fontana di Trevi) is an 18th-century fountain in the Trevi district in Rome, Italy, designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini and several others. Standing 26.3 metres (86 ft) high and 49.15 metres (161.3 ft) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world.
