The Howard Peters Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens of Baltimore sits at the southwestern edge of Druid Hill Park, not far from the Maryland Zoo. It's a true relic of the Victorian era, having been built in 1888. It's designer was George A. Frederick, who also designed Baltimore City Hall. \n\nThe Conservatory originally consisted of the Palm House, seen here in the photo, and an adjacent Orchid Room. A renovation in 2004 added three new greenhouses, featuring Mediterranean, tropical and desert environments.

These gardens are typically inspired by traditional Japanese culture and aesthetics, which emphasize the beauty of simplicity, asymmetry, and the natural world.\n\nOne of the defining features of a Japanese garden is the use of rocks and water to create a sense of balance and harmony. Large rocks and boulders are often strategically placed throughout the garden to represent mountains or islands, while ponds or streams are incorporated to represent the ocean or a river.\n\nPlants are also an important element of Japanese gardens, and are carefully chosen and arranged to complement the natural landscape. Traditional Japanese plants such as cherry blossom trees, Japanese maples, bamboo, and moss are often featured, along with carefully pruned trees and shrubs that create a sense of order and symmetry.\n\nBridges, stepping stones, and lanterns are also common features in Japanese gardens, adding to the overall sense of balance and tranquility. These elements are often placed in specific locations to create a sense of movement and encourage visitors to explore the garden and experience its beauty from different perspectives.\n\nIn summary, a Japanese garden landscape is a carefully crafted and harmonious space that combines natural elements with traditional Japanese design principles to create a serene and tranquil environment that is both beautiful and calming.
