Cocos (Keeling) Islands: the German light cruiser SMS Emden, commanded by Captain Karl von Müller, achieved notoriety in the early months of World War I as a commerce raider in the Indian Ocean, sinking or capturing over two dozen Allied vessels—including the Russian cruiser Zhemchug and French destroyer Mousquet—while minimizing civilian casualties through chivalrous conduct. On November 9, 1914, von Müller targeted the vital British cable and wireless station on Direction Island in the remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands, a key communications hub linking Australia, Asia, and Europe, to disrupt Allied coordination and refuel from the captured collier Buresk; disguising Emden with a fake fourth funnel to mimic a British cruiser, he landed a 50-man party led by Hellmuth von Mücke to destroy the facilities, but the station superintendent briefly transmitted a distress signal before jamming. This alert reached the nearby ANZAC troop convoy, prompting HMAS Sydney—under Captain John Glossop—to detach and intercept, leading to the Battle of Cocos: a 90-minute single-ship engagement where Sydney's superior range and speed inflicted devastating damage, killing 134 Germans and wounding 69, while suffering only four dead and 16 wounded. With Emden ablaze and crippled, von Müller beached her on North Keeling Island's reef to save his crew, who surrendered after a final exchange of fire; von Mücke's shore party escaped on the schooner Ayesha, embarking on an epic 15,000-kilometer odyssey across the Indian Ocean and Arabian Peninsula to reach Germany in 1915. The wreck remains a protected historic site under Australian law, marking the sad loss of a European vessel and Royal Australian Navy's first victory.
