I have seen red-eared terrapins in this pond in Mitcham, Surrey, England - probably released by pet owners. This, however, looks like a closely related sub-species, the yellow-bellied slider (Trachemys scripta scripta). Originally from Uruguay / South America, these terrapins enjoyed 15 minutes of fame when the teenage mutant ninja turtles entered our living rooms. Along with the turtles, the terrapins' star faded and many were released into the wild. This one has survived the dredging of its home pond and is sun bathing on a barley hay bale.

Emys orbicularis is only indigenous inland turtle in Slovenia. Its habitat is mainly stagnant or slow-flowing waters, surrounded by vegetation. Its habitat is in Barje swamps near Ljubljana, Slovenia.
