Birding and Hiking
Mallards are water birds in which females are usually brown, but this female displays a high degree of leucism – it is nearly all white. In leucism, the pigmentation cells that develop from the neural crest are faulty. Similar conditions are (hypopigmentation), where the pigment cells fail only in parts, resulting in a piebald effect; and (albinism). An albino has a lack of only one pigment, melanin. As a result, the melanin layer inside the eye is missing, and albinos have pink 'bloodshot' eyes. The eyes of leucistic animals are pigmented normally, because the melanin within the eyes does not develop from the neural crest. This female is probably the offspring of an all-white mallard female that inhabited this same pond on Wandsworth Common, London.

Goose Portrait
Duck is the common name for numerous species of waterfowl in the family Anatidae. Ducks are generally smaller and shorter-necked than swans and geese, which are members of the same family.
