Sun Coral Tubastraea faulkneri is a large polyp stony coral from the family Dendrophyliidae. The species occurs all over the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean in a wide depth range of 3-225 meters, often in greater densities on vertical walls and caves. \nThese corals are slow growers and they do not contribute to coral reef development. Unlike many tropical corals, they are azooxanthellate or non-photosynthetic, meaning that they do not live in symbiosis with zooxanthellae in their tissues, allowing them to grow in complete darkness as long as they can capture enough food, usually plankton. \nThey extend their translucent tentacles like these specimen, usually during the late evening and the night and during the day the tentacles are completely retracted, but not in this case: It is midday under a ledge, so it remains dark enough.\nLembeh Strait, Indonesia\n1°27'38.166 N 125°13'34.284 E at 1.5m depth at 11:57 AM
