Elmina, Central Region, Ghana: main entrance and south façade of Fort Santiago / Santo Iago / Sao Jago / Sao Tiago da Mina fort aka Fort Coenraadsburg / Conraadsburg - Built by the Dutch in 1652, it is two hundred meters from the better known, older and larger Fort São Jorge da Mina (aka Elmina Castle). Fort Santiago da Mina sits atop a hill where the Portuguese built a fortified chapel between 1555 and 1558. It was from this hill that the Dutch bombarded the Portuguese fortress, taking it in 1637 after several unsuccessful attempts in the previous decades. To prevent their enemies from conquering the recently captured Portuguese fortress from the hill of St. Jago, the Dutch fortified the hill with earthen ramparts. They converted the chapel into a residential building, built a watchtower and finally built Fort Sao Jago da Mina / Conraadsburg in 1652. The fort was never taken, in 1872, like other Dutch holdings on the Gold Coast, it was sold to the British. The fortress was restored between 1956 and 1960 and attracts a significant number of visitors - Feitoria da Mina - Unesco world heritage site.
