Archeological excavations on the site shows remains all the way back to the 6th century BC. The first fortress dates back to 48 BC during roman rule. In the 10th century Muslim Berber forces rebuilt the fortress including the outer walls and towers that still exist. In 1147 Lisbon was reconquered by the a Christian Portuguese army under command of Afonso Henriques with the help of crusaders from northern Europe.
