Aphrodisias was a small ancient Greek city in Caria. From Denizli, take highway E87 toward Nazilli; about 15 miles before Nazilli, turn left on the road to Karacasu and Geyre. Aphrodisias is about a mile past the modern village of Geyre.

It was built in 161 AD by the Athenian magnate Herodes Atticus in memory of his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla. It was originally a steep-sloped amphitheater with a three-story stone front wall and a wooden roof made of expensive, cedar of Lebanon timber. It was used as a venue for music concerts with a capacity of 5,000. It lasted intact until it was destroyed and turned into a ruin by the Heruli in 267 AD. -

Pompeii, Italy - September 9, 2008: Restoration work at the Ruins of Pompeii, Italy. Two men workers and vivid blue clear sky are in the image. The Roman City of Pompeii was buried under a thick carpet of volcanic ash in the year 79 A.D when a Volcano Mount Vesuvius (Monte Vesuvio) has erupted. The eruption was one of the most catastrophic volcanic eruptions in European history. The volcano is located on the Gulf of Naples in Campania, about 5.6 mi east of Naples.
