Mosaic Sign for the Languedoc-Roussillon town of Elne, in South Western France. The town which stands four kilometres inland from the Mediterranean coast and twelve kilometres from Perpignan, the current capital of the region. Elne, part of Occitania administrative region, was originally called Illiberis and was the then capital of the Roussillon region. Hannibal and his famed elephants, stayed here for a while whilst travelling to Itally in the 3rd century BC.The Ville d'Elne sign features the town's Roman style cathedral, Sainte-Eulalie-et-Sainte-Julie, which was completed in the 11th century. After a terrible siege in 1285 in which the town was burned and inhabitants massacred, when Elne was part of adjacent Spain and Catalonia, the rebuilding of the Cathedral was never finished. The tower on the right of the sign was built, but the tower on the left was not rebuilt until much later - accounting for the fact that this tower was then built in a contrasting red brick, as it remains to this day. This architectural quirk now gives a distinctive and unique character to the building and as such is featured on the nameplate sign for the town.

Approaching Falketind mountain peaks (2068 meters high) in Jotunheimen National Park, Norway in fall (September), involving hiking, clambering and climbing in very steep terrain on ice and rock. The peaks are viewed from south-west. This hike is very demanding and only suitable for experienced hikers in good physical shape. The 1820 ascent on Falketind (at the time called Koldedalstinden) was the first ascent on an alpine mountain in Norway. The climbing team included Baltazar Mathias Keilhau and Christian Peder Bianco Boeck. They ascended via Falkbreen glacier and the northern ridge. The image is in black and white (monochrome) and part of a series.
