The wild burro or donkey originated with the African Wild Ass (Equus africanus), a member of the horse family Equidae. It was domesticated and used as a working animal for at least 5000 years. In the 1500’s, the donkey was introduced to the American Southwest by the Spaniards. Subsequently they have been used as pack animals by prospectors and ranchers. At the end of the mining era, many escaped or were turned loose. With their ability to survive the harsh desert conditions, they formed wild herds and thrived. Today, Arizona has most of the wild burro population in the United States. Wild burros have long ears, a short mane and vary in color. The most common color is gray with a white muzzle and white belly. They are less than 4 feet tall and an adult will weigh about 500 pounds. The burro herd at Homolovi is feral and showed up in the park in the early 2000’s. This burro was photographed while grazing at Homolovi State Park near Winslow, Arizona, USA.

The donkey or ass, Equus africanus a sinus, is a domesticated member of the Equidae or horse family. The wild ancestor of the donkey is the African wild ass, E. africanus. The donkey has been used as a working animal for at least 5000 years. There are more than 40 million donkeys in the world, mostly in underdevelopedcountries, where they are used principally as draught or pack animals. Working donkeys are often associated with those living at or below subsistence levels. Small numbers of donkeys are kept for breeding or as pets in developed countries.
